Hi! My name is Darren Spruyt and I have been in the financial planning industry since 2015. In my years of experience, I have noticed a few trends.

Firstly, consumers are forced to become more financially responsible. While the older generations could do away with financial planning, they had lower life expectancies and bigger families, which meant that in the event of an emergency they had more people to share the responsibility and their children was their retirement plan.

However, with medical, education and housing inflation rising faster than our incomes we cannot afford to do that today. We are now known as the “sandwich generation”. 

Consumers are becoming more financially savvy. We do more research compared to our parents and we demand more out of the consultants we work with. We don’t just want a salesman. Instead, we want someone competent and someone who also understands us and involves us in the whole process of planning and implementation. That is why, one of my core values is continuous learning, to always develop myself professionally so that I can value-add to my clients and best address their concerns.

Lastly, consumers have access to many options today. With Singapore being a financial hub in the region, many industry players want to establish a stronghold position here and as a result, more competitors have entered the market and more competitive and complex solutions have emerged.
